According to research from Toronto-based Institute for Work & Health, employees in their first month at a new job are 3 times more likely to be injured on the job than workers who have been at their jobs for longer than a year. 

While the research doesn’t explain why new employees are at such high risk for injury, experts have speculated. Some point out that new employees are performing unfamiliar tasks, some of which are dangerous. Others suggest that new employees may be hesitant to ask questions because they want to appear competent and instill their new employers with confidence in them. Still others say that new employees are unfamiliar with the equipment and work conditions and possibly overwhelmed by the sheer number of details they must learn in a short amount of time. 

Whatever the reason for this increased risk, employers should evaluate their work health and safety inductions to minimise danger to new employees.

1. Skimming Over Health and Safety Policies
